Analytical Review “Agrarian and Food Systems of the Global South” (December 2024) The December issue addresses competition in the grain market in Nigeria, as well as the deterioration of food security in Syria. There is fierce competition in the African wheat market between suppliers from Russia and the EU. Of particular interest is Nigeria, which imports 97% of the wheat consumed in the country, and where the government annually allocates an average of $2-3 billion to purchase wheat on foreign markets. The situation in Syria is no less stressful, as the country is increasingly dependent on external supplies of wheat. In 2020, over 12 million Syrians suffered from food shortages, which is 50% of the population. In the new review, we continue to monitor and identify trends to acquaint readers with the real situation in agriculture in the countries of the Global South.

Analytical Report “Agrarian and Food Systems of the Global South” (September 2024)

The number of hungry people in the world decreased by 1.25 million in 2023, but still exceeds 730 million. Hunger is spreading, especially in Africa, where more than a third of hungry people live. The paradox is that some countries with starving residents are economically successful. For example, Egypt is the third most populous country on the African continent. Morocco is the fourth largest economy on the continent and the 11th most populous (more than 37 million residents). In other words, these two countries are leaders in terms of GDP per capita.
