Analytical Report “Financial and Investment Markets of the Global South” (December 2024)
In the final issue of the review for 2024, we present new trends in China's investment strategy in South American countries, examining the cases of four countries at once. From 2005 to 2023, China implemented 176 investment projects in 12 South American countries worth over $159 billion.
The main recipients of investments are Brazil, Peru, Chile and Argentina, which account for more than 80% of Chinese investments. In the structure of China's investment portfolio for the implementation of projects in South America, the extractive industry predictably leads (43.5%). In second place is energy, whose share in the package of Chinese investments on the continent reaches 38.5%. These two sectors account for 82% of all investments, which indicates China's desire to gain access to reliable raw materials and energy resources. China's investment activity in South America is increasing competition on the continent. However, the peak of Chinese investment growth (2010-2018) has passed, and after the pandemic, activity in the macro-region has weakened. However, the transition to green energy, growing demand for rare metals and dynamic development of innovative sectors may become new drivers of Chinese investment in South America.
